After shattering box office records across Latin America, “The Ballad of Hortensia” has made history in El Salvador as the highest-grossing home-grown film of all time. Now the film is set to captivate U.S. audiences when it premieres in theaters nationwide on May 2.

Directed by renowned Salvadoran filmmaker Arturo Menéndez, "The Ballad of Hortensia” delivers a laugh-out-loud experience that blends satire, social critique and a heartfelt journey of self-discovery.

“This film is more than just a comedy; it's a reflection of societal expectations through humor and emotion,” says director Arturo Menéndez. “We're thrilled to bring ‘The Ballad of Hortensia’ to American audiences and continue the conversation about identity, self-discovery and second chances.”

Starring Julio Yúdice, the Salvadoran comedian and creator of the beloved character La Tenchis, alongside Francisco Gattorno, Helena Haro and Lourdes Chávez, the film tells the story of Alex, a self-centered comedian who wakes up trapped in the body of a woman, Hortensia, after a reckless accident.

As he figures out how to navigate his new reality, Alex must confront gender dynamics, societal norms and his own limitations, leading him to a hilarious and revealing transformation. With the help of his talent agent, Mauricio, Hortensia forges an alliance to regain his true identity. She intervenes just in time to prevent a hitman from killing Alex, thus foiling the executives' plan.

“With its irreverent humor, stellar performances, and socially conscious storytelling, there's no doubt that ‘The Ballad of Hortensia’ will resonate with both Latino and mainstream audiences, reinforcing the power of Latin American stories on the big screen,’ said the film producer Elias Axume. “This film is a testament to the creativity and boldness of Latin American cinema, and we're excited to share it with U.S. audiences. It's a story that entertains, challenges and sparks conversation—everything great cinema should do.”
