There is no overall term for mixing regional Mexican music with trap and hip hop as there is for other genres like banda, norteño, sierreño, grupero and mariachi, but if I had to create one, it would be RegMex.

Music streaming apps like Spotify have analyzed the growth of what they call “Mexican music,” which I feel generalizes the genre, considering that there is Mexican music that can also fall into pop, ballads, alternative rock and other genres, although there are also artists who are starting to mix emo with reggaetón, which is clearly new and surprising to say the least. According to Spotify, the genre grew by 56% in 2022, “doubling the growth rate of the previous two years. Since 2019, the volume of streams has more than doubled to reach 5.6 billion.”

For users of the music app in Mexico, one in every four music streams is a “Mexican music” track, while in the United States, the app considers it among the fastest-growing genres.

In the regional Mexican world, Jimmy Guzman combines the genre with trap and hip hop to create catchy rhythms.

And now, he is debuting his new single “Vendetta” today, featuring Tijuana star Ysrael Barajas via Lumbre Music.

"Vendetta" showcases Guzman’s high-octane sound, a genre-bending fusion of hip-hop, dembow and reggaetón anchored in the roots of regional Mexican music. He draws heavy sonic influence from the atmospheric production and melodic cadence of artists like Drake, Rich The Kid and XXXTENTACION.

The song is inspired by his childhood and the sacrifices of his own mother, the track reveals a journey of ambition and unrelenting devotion as Jimmy navigates the pressure of balancing his meteoric rise with the desire to provide a fulfilling life for his partner. As soon as the chorus hits, “Vendetta” envelops the listener in an effortless rhythm to bob your head to. The NSFW lyrics are certainly explicit in Spanish.

“Revenge is a dish best served cold... ‘Vendetta,’ a song that combines ego and betrayal, was born from a failed relationship caused by the life of a true rock star,” Guzman said about the song. “A person who cannot control excesses, money, or women. However, with a very big but broken heart, he wrote this song and put pen to paper to create what is now ‘Vendetta.’ From me to you, from you to that person you miss so much.”

Guzman has amassed 5.1 million monthly listeners only on Spotify and over 165.6 million global streams. The first track to ignite his fandom was “Huaraches,” which has amassed over 4.5 million streams to date, followed by “Antrax” with over 5 million streams to date. His top song “3 AM” has over 127 million streams. Most recently his single “La Plebita” featuring Alan Arrieta also entered Mexico’s Spotify Top 150.

He was born and raised in Veracruz and blends tropical sounds such as dembow with electronic EDM music. Recently, he was signed by Lumbre Music, which was funded by Alexander Guerra and Ramón Ruíz, singer/songwriter and accordionist, respectively who are both members of Legado 7. Lumbre Music and Lumbre Publishing opened their doors in 2018 and have signed Yahritza y Su Esencia. In the past, Lumbre Music reportedly also worked back-to-back with Rancho Humilde to develop artists such as Fuerza Regida and Herencia de Patrones.

The song will be available to listen to at 4 p.m. PT.
