Several Hollywood studios urged the Trump administration to closely monitor the Mexican judiciary to ensure its rulings comply with the USMCA.

The Mexican newspaper Reforma reported that TV, film, and streaming studios, grouped under the Motion Picture Association (MPA), sent an appeal to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).

"The MPA urges the U.S. government to remain vigilant regarding Mexico's implementation and effective compliance with the Mexican legal reforms necessary for the implementation of the USMCA, especially following Mexico's 2024 judicial reforms."

They urge close monitoring of the actions and rulings of this new judiciary to ensure compliance with Mexico's obligations regarding intellectual property rights under the USMCA.

As early as 2024, the MPA expressed concern about the potential effects on freedom of expression of the 2024 reform to Article 2 of the Mexican Constitution, which recognizes Indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples as subjects of public law with their own legal personality and assets.

The MPA has an office in Mexico and Latin America. The Motion Picture Association in Mexico (MPA Mexico) advocates for major international producers and distributors of movies, television and streaming programming in Mexico. CALÓ News reached out to the MPA Mexico for comment and will update this story when we receive a statement.

"There is significant concern that the authorities could use these regulations to censor and limit the freedom of expression of creators and the media," the MPA warned.
