The TransLatin@ Coalition is organizing a two-mile charity walk and block party on Sunday, August 24, called Walk4Humanity.
“The Walk4Humanity is not just a march; it’s a declaration. We are walking for our lives, for our dignity, and for our right to exist without fear,” said Bamby Salcedo. The walk also seeks to educate the public and uplift Transgender, Gender Expansive, and Intersex (2TGI) communities while also generating funding to support the ongoing essential services the organization provides.
Some of those services include the following:
Workforce Development: helping TGI individuals build careers and escape cycles of economic exclusion.
Violence Prevention Services: offering trauma-informed support for those targeted due to their identity.
Housing & Case Management: placing unhoused trans individuals into stable homes and providing wraparound services.
Substance Use & Mental Health Support: addressing community trauma through culturally competent care.
Re-entry Programs: supporting TGI individuals navigating post-incarceration life.
Salcedo told CALÓ News that as services are being cut, the organization is struggling to stay afloat with the demands of the community. “The calls for immigration services have increased to 100%. We are supersaturated right now; we have about 67 active cases and we only have one lawyer,” she said.
Another issue she highlighted affecting the community, particularly around immigration, is the ongoing fear among individuals of coming out, going to work, or engaging in everyday activities they once felt safe doing. While safety nets exist for traditional families, similar protections and resources are often lacking for members of the LGBTQ+ community.
As the Trump Administration keeps targeting the Latinx communities and the LGBTQ+ communities, many are reaching out to the organization not just for legal services but also for their food distribution program, which serves lunch every day.
Since the inception of the program, they were serving about 30-40 plates and now they are serving between 40-60. “We're serving about 15 plates more than we were. And so that has happened in the last couple of months,” Salcedo said. “With our government cutting funding and increasing hostility, now more than ever we must show up and invest in our survival.”
The organization says Walk4Humanity will help build a long-term sanctuary for those pushed to the margins. It will also help keep services that are crucial for Transgender, Gender Expansive, and Intersex (2TGI) communities
