Experts say that Coronavirus cases are rising rapidly in California. Public health officials have reported roughly a 12.5% rise in cases in Los Angeles County since August.
CALÓ News spoke with Demetrio Cardenas, a provider and leader in the Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) world. With over eight years of experience as a physician's assistant in family medicine and over 15 years of experience in the technical and academic fields of economics and math, Cardenas uses his deep passion for helping others
Cardenas also brings a distinct and valuable perspective to his current position as both a Senior PA-C/MPH and the Director of Quality and Clinical Risk at Via Care Community Health Center in East Los Angeles. He shared that as COVID cases are on the rise, it's important to consider the new updated vaccine specially for individuals who are considered at higher risk.
The new Comirnaty vaccine protects against the 2019 Coronavirus disease and is for people who are 65 years of age and older, or are five years through 64 years of age with at least one underlying condition that puts them at high risk for severe outcomes from the virus.

Why are COVID cases sharply increasing in Los Angeles?
“COVID has multiple variants that are more transmissible, which can lead to an increase in numbers. Waning immunity is another significant issue, but we have the power to mitigate this by continuing vaccination, just as we do for influenza, to help curb the rise in cases. It's crucial to be aware of the risks. More indoor gatherings during holidays and less adherence to mask use significantly increase the risk for infection. Let's stay cautious and keep these risks in mind.”
As COVID cases are on the rise, what is happening on the frontlines?
“The rise in COVID cases not only increases the risk of infection for all staff but also underscores the crucial role each of us plays in maintaining the health and safety of our healthcare system. This surge also translates to a higher number of emergency room visits, a situation that requires our collective vigilance to prevent system overload.
“Moreover, more vulnerable patients, such as seniors, pregnant patients and children, could be at risk of COVID exposure. However, we are actively working to alleviate this burden through the effective use of telemedicine, demonstrating our adaptability and commitment to patient care. It's crucial to note that the risk has increased since the relaxation of the mask mandate, a situation that demands our immediate attention and action.”
Could masks be enforced once again in the County?
“As of recent reports, there are no active universal mask mandates in L.A. County for public settings. Masking is still recommended in high‑risk settings, for vulnerable people, indoors, crowded or poorly ventilated places, or if you are sick / exposed. Mandates might come back in some instances of high impact on the industry, but that depends on the health authorities.”
If misinformation is spread about this new vaccine, how are vulnerable communities affected?
“Misinformation has real consequences, including lower vaccine uptake among patients who refuse vaccination and increased distrust, particularly when more vulnerable populations are targeted.”
Why is skipping vaccination dangerous for high-risk communities?
“Skipping vaccination increases the risk of hospitalization and severe illness, causes strain on the healthcare system and diverts resources from other diseases, particularly at the emergency room, leading to higher crowds and longer wait times.”
Where can folks get the updated COVID vaccine?
“I always recommend speaking to your primary care provider or to check the L.A. County Public Health Department website for recommendations.”
